The historical "Arethusa" industrial shell is mindfully retrofitted and expanded into a sustainable, diachronic museum where the architecture itself becomes an exhibit.

TheConcept

The proposal for the New Archaeological-Diachronic Museum of Chalkida centers on the meticulous repair and adaptive reuse of the listed industrial building, "Arethusa." The architectural intervention aims to restore the landmark structure to its original historical form while simultaneously equipping it to function as a high-performance modern museum.

Due to the distinct constraints of the land shape and the footprint of the existing listed building, the new museum extension is designed to run parallel along the side of the original fabric, creating a respectful architectural dialogue between past and present.

TheInteriorThreshold&BuildingasanExhibit

The critical structural connection between the historic shell and the contemporary extension is achieved through two subtly sheltered, transparent corridors linking both of their southern facades. This layout transforms the circulation paths into a unique spatial experience:

The Living Exhibit: By encapsulating the connection along the southern side, the original external facade of the listed Arethusa building is brought inside the new complex, emerging as a monumental exhibit visible from within the gallery pathways.

Timeless Narrative: This intersection underscores the diachronic narrative of the museum, seamlessly merging the raw historic architecture with the antiquities on display.

BioclimaticControls&Sustainability

The structural expansion is deeply rooted in environmental sustainability and energy conservation. The southern connectivity zone functions as a protective climatic buffer for the historic building.

By filtering intense solar radiation, this structural envelope creates an interior atmosphere bathed in soft, diffused daylight. This optimal daylighting strategy acts as a passive bioclimatic mechanism, drastically reducing mechanical energy demands while offering a serene, visually uniform environment tailored for both artifact preservation and visitor comfort.
